Wedding Venues in Howrah: Areas, Prices and What to Check
Why families look at wedding venues in Howrah
Howrah is not just "the station side". It has its own busy wedding market, with halls in Shibpur, Salkia, Bally, Bandhaghat, Ramrajatala, Domjur, Andul Road and along Ichapur Road. Families choose Howrah for a few simple reasons:
- Close to home: if the bride's or groom's family lives in Howrah or Hooghly, relatives do not need to cross the river at all.
- Lower starting rates: the starting per-plate prices on our Howrah listings sit mostly in the ₹300–₹550 range for veg.
- Bigger halls: most Howrah halls on Webanquets list a capacity of 400 to 500 guests, which suits a full Bengali wedding guest list.
- Good links for outstation guests: Howrah Station is right there for relatives arriving by train from other districts and states.
Is Howrah cheaper than Kolkata?
Often, yes, on the starting price. But the starting price is only where the conversation begins. Here is how to think about it honestly:
| What to compare | What to ask the hall |
|---|---|
| Starting per-plate price | Which menu does this price cover? How many items, and is it veg only? |
| Non-veg upgrade | What is the non-veg starting price, and what fish or meat items are included? |
| Hall rent | Is rent separate from food, or included above a minimum plate count? |
| Extras | Generator, decoration, cleaning, extra hours and GST: what is included and what is extra? |
| Outside caterer | Can you bring your own caterer, and is there a fee for it? |
Two halls with the same starting price can end up very different once you add these. Always ask for a written quote for your actual guest count and menu before paying an advance.
Popular Howrah areas for weddings
Shibpur
Shibpur sits close to the Vidyasagar Setu approach and is one of the easier parts of Howrah to reach from central and South Kolkata. F N Banquet on GT Road South in Sibpur lists capacity for up to 500 guests, with veg menus from ₹500 and non-veg from ₹650 per plate. Its page lists AC and car parking.
Salkia
Salkia is an old, well-known Howrah neighbourhood on the north side, handy for families living around Salkia, Ghusuri and Liluah. Aarti Banquet on Benaras Road lists capacity for 400 guests, with veg from ₹400 and non-veg from ₹650 per plate, plus AC and car parking.
Bally
Bally is a good choice when many guests come from the Hooghly district side or from Dakshineswar and Baranagar across the Bally Bridge. Phoolbari Banquet on Radhanath Banerjee Lane lists capacity for 500 guests, with veg from ₹400 and non-veg from ₹550 per plate, and AC and car parking on its amenities list.
Ross Road, near Howrah town
Rivera Banquet on Rose Mary Lane, Ross Road, lists veg from ₹550 and non-veg from ₹700 per plate, with AC, an elevator and car parking. Its page does not show a capacity figure, so ask the venue team for the exact number before you shortlist it.
You can see the full set of halls on our banquet halls in Howrah page, including venues in Ramrajatala, Bandhaghat, Andul Road and Ichapur Road.
What about riverside venues?
Many families picture a wedding beside the Ganga with the bridge lights in the background. Several Howrah neighbourhoods, like Shibpur, Salkia and Bally, are close to the river, but being near the river is not the same as having a river view. None of the Howrah halls we checked on Webanquets mention a river view or riverside lawn on their pages. If a view matters to you, ask the venue directly, visit in the evening, and see it with your own eyes before you book.
Is Howrah easy for guests?
This is the question that decides most Howrah bookings. Think about where your guests are coming from:
- Guests from Howrah, Hooghly or outstation by train: Howrah is usually the easiest option for them.
- Guests from North or Central Kolkata: Howrah Bridge and the metro to Howrah make the trip manageable, but evening traffic near the bridge can be heavy.
- Guests from South Kolkata: Vidyasagar Setu is the quicker road route to Shibpur and Mandirtala side halls.
- Guests from Salt Lake, New Town or EM Bypass: this is the longest trip. Consider arranging a car or a bus for elderly relatives.
A simple tip: open a map at the actual time of your function, say 7:30 pm on a weekday, and check the travel time from three or four places where most of your relatives live. That gives you a real picture, not a guess.
Checklist before you book a Howrah wedding venue
- Confirm the real seating capacity and the dining capacity for one sitting.
- Check parking: how many cars fit, and is there space for a bus?
- Ask about the lane: can a decorated car reach the gate on a busy evening?
- Confirm AC in both the hall and the dining area.
- Ask if there is a lift, especially for elderly guests, if the hall is on an upper floor.
- Check generator backup and whether diesel is charged extra.
- Ask if rooms are available for the bride's or groom's party. Many Howrah halls on our listings show no rooms, so you may need a nearby hotel.
- Get the full quote in writing, including GST, decoration and cleaning.
- Ask about the outside caterer policy before you finalise food.
- Visit at the same time of day as your function.
Food: in-house menu or your own caterer?
Many Howrah halls show a per-plate price, which usually means they offer food through their own kitchen or a tie-up caterer. Some families prefer a caterer they already trust, especially for a traditional Bengali menu. If you plan to bring your own caterer, ask the hall about this at the very first visit, because some halls charge a fee or do not allow it. For families who want a proper Bengali wedding spread, our partner Senmaahashoy Caterers handles Bengali wedding catering and can talk to you about the menu.
